An Introduction to MODx Evolution
I should be very clear from the start... this isn't TRULY a Web and Flow Design site. During the development for this site, Desmond worked full-time with The Salvation Army - Web and Flow wasn't hired to build it. However, he built it single-handedly and there are some important points that make this site worthy of mentioning here.
First, this site represents about a year of work - from planning, to getting buy-in from the leadership, through development.
Secondly, this site represents not only the divisional (e.g. regional) office for North and South Carolina, but also includes "micro-sites" for all 50+ local offices scattered throughout North and South Carolina. Local users can log in and edit their information or, for those offices that simply don't have the staff to take care of updated content, the main regional office is able to "set" default content on a regular basis.
Finally, and most significantly, this was our introduction to MODx. The old site that this replaced was a beast. It was built on an archaic Lotus Domino setup that was simply the worst thing we've ever had the opportunity to work on. Load times were literally tracked in minutes.
In searching for the most flexible, expandable CMS solution, Desmond stumbled on MODx and after a little research and playing around with the code, realized what an amazing platform this really was.
The new SalvationArmyCarolinas.org is built on MODx Evolution with loads of custom PHP and databases that just work. It's intuittive and easy to use. The local offices seem to love it.... traffic is up over 1100% from just prior to launch.
And, the site was even featured in the MODx newsletter!
